Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland - Series 1

A time of relative peace in Northern Ireland escalates to full-blown conflict. When tensions between Protestants and Catholics explode, the British Army is deployed.

A deeply segregated society emerges as the violence escalates, the British Army beds down and paramilitary groups police many working-class areas.

The impact of the hunger strikes is seen through the eyes of three women. Tit-for-tat killings, car bombs, and assassinations are now part of everyday life in Northern Ireland.

Tensions rise as the police and army infiltrate paramilitary organisations to gain intelligence. No one can be trusted as fear and suspicion run rife.

There have been many false dawns in the conflict, but finally the desire for change propels the possibility of peace for the next generation.
