This is a really quite enjoyably rhyming hybrid of childhood fairy tales given a bit of a refresh - without losing any of the underlying sentiment or humour that made them memorable in the first place. It's all narrated by way of a conversation between the shrewd wolf and the gullable and short-sighted granny. His aim is to wheedle his way into the position where he can gobble up her grand-daughter "Red Riding Hood". Now this caped young lass is anything but the screaching damsel in distress here, indeed she plays quite a pivotal role in stopping that other wolf that likes pigs with straw houses. "Snow White" and "Cinderella" - or just "Ella" to her friends, both get a look in too as the former meets seven chaps under four foot tall who have a penchant for losing their shirts on the horses and the former who manages to attract the attention of the prince - but he's actually a bit of a prat, and a brutal one at that (think "Queen of Hearts" from the mind of Lewis Carroll). The stories stitch together entertainingly and the animations detail both the characters and their surroundings to maximise appeal to adults and children alike; indeed I reckon there is probably more for us adults who recall these from our younger days than perhaps for today's weans. It is an effortless hour of quickly paced and characterful storytelling and if you do get a chance to see it at a cinema, then do - just don't take the kids.
